Voice Disorders in South Portland, ME
What is a voice disorder?
Voice disorders have a wide range of presentation, from vocal hoarseness to a complete inability to speak.
What causes a voice disorder?
Voice disorders or disruptions can be caused by a number of factors: smoking, overuse (coaches, teachers, and singers often fall into this category), cancer, surgery, acid reflux, stress, and more. Often, there is a disruption in the movement of the vocal cords that lead to the alteration in the voice or the complete inability to produce audible speech.
How do we treat voice disorders?
In conjunction with the patient’s ENT, our voice clinicians conduct perceptual and physiological evaluations and create an individualized treatment plan. Through weekly or bi-weekly voice therapy, the patient can learn the skills to recover from a voice disorder.
