Post-Concussion Syndrome is a term used to describe mild traumatic brain injury or mTBI. If this description seems oxymoronic and confusing, the literature regarding the difference between TBI, mTBI, and PCC will further serve to obfuscate. The American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control defines a concussion as "loss of consciousness for no more than 30 minutes or amnesia as a result of a mechanical force to the head, and a Glasgow Coma Score (GCS) of 13 to 15...". This model also uses the most commonly accepted definition of concussion as established by the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) as "trauma-induced alteration of mental status that may or may not involve loss of consciousness". Although not explicitly stated in the AAN definition, a concussion is generally viewed as a transient state from which the individual will recover fully in a relatively short period of time. In contrast, TBI is viewed as a permanent alteration of brain function. Furthermore, concussions are less likely than TBIs to involve motor neurons, and therefore rarely include fine and gross motor impairments. However, the cognitive effects of a concussion can be as devastating as those incurred in TBI.
Concussions can have a huge impact on your life. You want to make sure you get the proper concussion treatment to make sure you get back to your way of life. The term CVA refers to Cerebral Vascular Accident and is synonymous with the term Stroke. Symptoms of CVA are sudden in onset and include symptoms of weakness and loss of sensation. When a person had suffered a CVA, the symptoms experienced are dependent upon the area of the brain that has been affected. The most commonly experienced are: complete or partial paralysis in the limbs on one side of the body, distortion or loss of speech, inability to understand and/or express language and impairment of visual perception.
There are two primary causes of CVA: Ischemic and Hemorrhagic.
An Ischemic event is the most common type of Stroke. This occurs when a clot forms in one of the blood vessels supplying the brain (a thrombus) or travels from another site to block off one of the arteries in the brain (an embolus).
In a Haemorrhagic event, which is much less common, a rupture occurs in one of the arteries in the brain. This is usually due to an aneurysm, which is an outpouching of an artery causing a weakness in the arterial wall.
